F.A.Q.s

First and foremost, you need to choose from licensed and insured roofing contractors. Other factors to consider would be the overall and detailed estimate a contractor should provide for you; customer reviews; experience and history of successful projects; and reliable and friendly customer service.

Research the companies you want to call before you call them. Look for reviews on Google, the Better Business Bureau, Trust Pilot and others. You can check out roofers through their Facebook pages and websites. Get several estimates before you commit to a contractor. Ask friends and family if they can make a recommendation based on services they have received from reliable roofers in your area.

There are many popular kinds of roofing materials. Your choice will come down to your preference of appearance, price and what is best for the climate you live in. Here are some examples:

  • Asphalt Shingles: Made of a layer of asphalt with either felt or fiberglass underneath. These are inexpensive, uniform, easy to install and replace and are weather & water proof.
  • Metal: Metal is very durable and usually installed in large panels, although corrugated steel is sometimes used as well. They are weather & water proof and fantastic at deflecting heat. These are very popular in warm/hot climates but are gaining in popularity everywhere.
  • Clay tiles: clay tiles have been around for centuries and have a very pleasant appearance. They are weather & water proof and do a great job of deflecting wind. Clay tiles can be made of concrete and come in a variety of colors.

Slate: slate is extremely durable and long-lasting. Dark and black are the only varieties in color, as this is a material hewn from shale, a kind of hard, volcanic rock. Slate is a more expensive option and also weighs more than other materials, so it is important to know that the framing of a roof can withstand the extra weight.

You should also check for the following things after having roof work done:

  1. Did the contractor use quality underlayment (if applicable)?
  2. Are the flashings placed appropriately and effectively so they help weather/waterproof the roof?
  3. Are there any signs of leaking, uneven surfaces or strange runoff when it rains?
  4. Did the roofers leave the job site the way they found it?
  5. Does the roof look nice, uniform and even?

You know you need to call a roofing contractor when:

  • Your roof has granular loss or missing shingles.
  • There is algae or mold growing on your roof. This is an indication of improper runoff or water damage.
  • Your roof is sagging. Usually this is due to the age of the roof, but for any reason that the roof sags, it needs to be inspected by a roofing contractor.
  • Your shingles have pops or blisters. This is when some shingles rise up instead of laying flat and can be due to impact damage or improper air circulation in your attic.
  • Your roof or ceiling have water stains or leaks.
  • There are visible damaged or loose flashings on the roof. Flashings are the thin metal strips that are used to waterproof the edges or protrusions of roof systems.
